Medication for cerebral palsy and the side effects

Nowadays, medication is available for cerebral palsy but these this tends to provide relief from the symptoms but not actually preventing or curing them. In cerebral palsy there are a certain number of disorders which occur in the form of impaired motor function. There is no cure available for this kind of disorder and medication is prescribed to treat certain symptoms of the disease.

In case of spasticity, muscle contractions, tight or stiff limbs, muscle relaxants are prescribed. Some of these include Botox A injections which help in relaxing the muscle tissue in the form of injectable medication. Some other muscle relaxants available are Diazepam, Baclofen, and Dantrolene. Dantrolene basically treats the skeletal muscle and lesson muscle’s calcium content as well as stiffness.

These are also referred to as Antispasmodics and help significantly in reducing muscle spasms. Most of these are taken orally. Basically these are given in the form of pills that have to be swallowed while baclofen is also consumed in the form of intrathecal baclofen (ITB). This procedure can be more advantageous in relieving severe spasms.

Benzodiazepines constitute most of the muscle relaxants. They operate on the GABA receptors in the brain. The GABA chemical is responsible for affecting the muscle and motor function. The muscle contractions can be calmed down and thus relax the patient. Physical therapy as well as surgery can also prove beneficial.

Dopaminergic drugs are also available. They function by regulating the amounts dopamine. Dopamine is responsible for affecting the motor function in various parts of the body. Some of the dopaminergic drugs like Sinemet and Artane have been quite successful.

Certain anticonvulsant medicines are also available which are quite helpful in case of steam seizure. Anticonvulsant medicines come under the category of barbiturates and benzodiazepines. Some of the anticonvulsants are Topamax, Lamictal, Trileptal, Zonegran and Neurontin. Seizure is one of the most common problems in cerebral palsy and these medications are quite helpful in stopping seizure.

Anticholinergics help those people who have uncontrollable movements or who have a problem of drooling frequently. In case of constipation, stool softeners and mild laxatives can be also of great help. You would be a little disappointed to know that medicines have not been too successful in the treatment of cerebral palsy. In cases involving involuntary movements, there has been limited success. Botulinum toxin can serve better as compared to the antispasmodic pills for the treatment of cerebral palsy.

However, some medicines also cause harmful side effects. For an instance, dantrolene sodium is responsible for causing liver damage. Thus it becomes really essential to have frequent blood tests while consuming this medicine. There can be other side effects like trouble breathing or swallowing. In fact doctors advise that some of the most common medicines for treating cerebral palsy should not be administered to the growing children.

In fact these medicines can cause even severe side effects rather than the tight muscles as well as muscle spasms which they are known for controlling. Drowsiness is also one of the common side effects. Thus it is really essential to consult your doctor before providing the patient with any kind of medication.
